Corn Gluten Meal Discussion Questions

    (The bluegrass seeds should die in the presence of corn gluten meal).
    • Questions to consider:
      • Should corn gluten meal be used in soils where desirable seeds were sown?
        (bluegrass, carrots, etc.) NO -- some germinating seeds will be affected.
        Current research is determining which vegetable species might be affected.
      • Should corn gluten meal be used in soils where perennial or annual plants were established or transplanted with a root system? YES -- established roots will not be affected.
  • Corn gluten meal acts a nitrogen source
    (The amount of N is 10% by weight).
    • Questions to consider:
      • Could corn gluten meal substitute effectively for other nitrogen fertilizers? YES -- research has shown that it is an effective N fertilizer.
      • Could the rate of corn gluten meal used for weed control provide excess nitrogen to the crop plant? YES -- careful calculations of rates are needed for each crop plant.
      • Could the rate of corn gluten meal used for weed control provide excess nitrogen to weeds in the planting and encourage healthy weed growth? YES -- nitrogen in the environment is effective for weeds as well as crop plants.
