-
Corn gluten meal acts as a preemergent
herbicide.
(The bluegrass seeds should die in the
presence of corn gluten meal).
- Questions
to consider:
- Should
corn gluten meal be used in soils where
desirable seeds were sown?
(bluegrass, carrots, etc.) NO -- some
germinating seeds will be affected.
Current research is determining which
vegetable species might be
affected.
- Should
corn gluten meal be used in soils where
perennial or annual plants were
established or transplanted with a root
system? YES -- established roots will
not be affected.
- Corn
gluten meal acts a nitrogen source
(The amount of N is 10% by weight).
- Questions
to consider:
- Could
corn gluten meal substitute effectively
for other nitrogen fertilizers? YES --
research has shown that it is an effective
N fertilizer.
- Could
the rate of corn gluten meal used for weed
control provide excess nitrogen to the
crop plant? YES -- careful calculations
of rates are needed for each crop plant.
- Could
the rate of corn gluten meal used for weed
control provide excess nitrogen to weeds
in the planting and encourage healthy weed
growth? YES -- nitrogen in the
environment is effective for weeds as well
as crop plants.
