WEEDS- How to manage them?

Working with a classmate, think of all the ways that weeds could be managed within a horticultural planting or enterprise.

Try to come-up with at least 10 methods or examples.

Put those brains to work!

  • tillage - shallow cultivation (mechanical)
  • organic mulches (straw, yard waste, plant residue, compost)
  • plastic mulches
  • cover crops planted in the previous years (preplant)
  • cover crops established within the planting (interplant cover crops)
  • allelopathic cover crops (ryegrass)
  • smoother cover crops (hairy vetch)
  • herbicide application
  • soil fumigation
  • hand-weeding
  • herbicide-resistant crops
  • using natural weed control products
  • excellent plant stand of desired crop/plant to crowd-out weeds
  • permament cover crops, such as bluegrass, inbetween rows (orchard)
  • crop rotation
  • biological control (insects, diseases, other natural pests of weeds)
  • mowing weeds
  • timely use of animals (geese)

Which methods would you consider to be sustainable? C D

(Remember that a sustainable practice contributes to the farm or enterprise's economic viability, conserves and protects the environment and natural resources, and contributes to society.)

  • all of above except, plastic mulches, herbicide application, and soil fumigation.

(Some may include herbicide-resistant crops in their list, as well).
